A gender-sensitive emergency response providing food, disability aids, and 1,268 hygiene kits to older women facing additional risks in disaster zones.
Gender-sensitive humanitarian action focusing on the intersectional risks of age and gender in disaster zones.
In disaster situations, older women often face unique risks due to age and gender. With funding from UNFPA (USD 123,733.63), HelpAge Sri Lanka implemented a targeted response between December 2024 and March 2025 to support 2,372 elders affected by floods.
The project focused on restoring dignity and safety by providing food packs, essential non-food items, and disability equipment, allowing elders to rebuild their lives within their familiar environments. A key component was the distribution of 1,268 specialized hygiene kits to senior women across Jaffna (634 kits) and Ampara (634 kits), specifically addressing menstrual and hygiene needs often overlooked in general relief efforts.
